“‘Eating’ will continue to symbolise life in the near future because the production, preparation and consumption of food is shaped by cultural and social rules, and it is seen as one of man’s defining cultural acts; it is the beginning of all trades and reflects civilisation’s evolution most clearly. But today we are already confronted with constantly growing population figures, climate change and an increasing shortage of resources, and this is raising more and more delicate and critical questions relating to food:
How will food retain its sensory appeal if it is made in the laboratory in the future and producing protein, for example, is reduced to farming insects? What meaning can food have if the act of cooking mutates into pure self-presentation and hedonistic luxury? What will the kitchen of the future look like if the young generation addresses the issue of food waste?
These ideas are an important part of the current debate. With my concept, I therefore want to shift people’s attention and their perception to the room the kitchen and the preparation of food (= the hearth). As the workshop and the soul of the home, the kitchen is the link between the neighbouring zones of home life, and between related cultural activities – it is a space for sense and sensuality.
For the Future Design special exhibition, I have taken these reflections and designed a kitchen that engages with the issue of degrowth on a three-dimensional and architectural level. To evoke a different way of thinking and generate a three-dimensional image of a kitchen of the future, the installation for imm cologne 2019 has been divided into four conceptual levels:
The first level is the ground, which is made up of loosely laid bricks of different heights that structure the stand area and form different zones. The noise produced when a visitor steps on the bricks and the archaic nature of its material aim to slow down the visitor in a sensuous way.
The next level is abstract architecture in consciously bold colours; it provides the visual division between the influences of the trade fair hall. A striking feature, it catches the eyes and sketches the diverse areas of a living situation and their functions.
Continuing further, the next level is a personal one, the level of everyday life. It features carefully presented objects such as pieces of furniture and accessories that express what it means to be human and what a home is. However, these objects have been chosen with a slight twist and are arranged so as to irritate the viewer, which may prompt them to question their own typical behaviour.
The fourth and last level is the zone of the kitchen itself, where visitors can discover a concentrated number of reinvented kitchen appliances and utensils. But these objects are not shown in reality and only become visible with an augmented reality app.
The project as a whole is designed to stimulate and, through its openness and abstraction, to encourage reflection. The aim is to focus attention on the issue of the kitchen and to use historic knowledge, real buildings and digital presentation technologies to present a glimpse of the near future.”
